BMW officially announced the celebration of
25 years of V12 engines for their vehicles. Machine configuration "V" 12-cylinder began in 1987, when BMW introduced the M70 V12 with SOHC valvetrain and assigned the task of supporting the BMW E31 8-Series, E32 7-Series, and became the basis for the development of the McLaren F1 and BMW LMR V12 LeMans.
M70 has a 5.0-liter cylinder volume capable of burst power up to 300-hp and a peak torque of 450 Nm, and debuted at the Geneva Motor Show. This machine is able to captivate the hearts and minds of many many people who see it.
However if traced its history, BMW has developed a V12 engine in 1972. In the process of development, the BMW decided to combine six-cylinder inline engine in the crankshaft. This design was later changed model "V" with a slope angle of 60 degrees.
The prototype machine was completed in 1974, but is still too heavy for the production vehicle. Research and development then stopped following the energy crisis issue.
Only after the moment of the crisis is over, BMW-delayed project back in 1982. BMW announces end result when the design is applied to the M70 V12 engine in 1987, then updated to M73 with the M70 machine basis. M70 machine itself remained in production until 1996, although the perfected version of the M73 was introduced in 1993.
Latest BMW V12 engine itself is known by the code N73 and N74, which mentenagai Rolls-Royce Phantom (N73) and the BMW 7-Series (N74).
